Kathmandu
Location
:
Nepal
|
Kathmandu valley is overwhelming. It is surrounded by a tier of green mountain wall above which tower mighty snow-capped peaks. The valley consists of three main towns of great historic, artistic and cultural interest: Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. It is situated 4,423 ft. above sea level.
In Kathmandu itself there are many sights and the countryside around it is stunning. Wherever you look, theres always something of interest: a small ancient temple, a small statue, a sadhu in bright saffron robes meditating or a Tibetan monk spinning his prayer wheel.
The highest concentration of attractions is within the area of Durbar Square. Just off the square is Freak Street which is well past its prime but still has a ...

Patan
Location
:
Nepal
|
Patan is just a few miles up the road from Katmandu. Despite the fact that Patan has fallen victim to increasing traffic and industrialization, it still is a good alternation to Kathmandu's hustle-and-bustle and smog (although the two of them will probably soon be co joined in one city). When strolling down the streets of the old town centre, the metalwork handicrafts shops are mute silences of a time when the manufacturing of handicrafts still was one of the most important ways of making a living (besides agriculture). The commercial handicrafts' heart beats at Mangel Bazaar these days.
Patan has a fascinating and enchanting Durbar square with impressive Bahal temples (the most famous one being the beautifully in d...

Pashupatinath
Location
:
Nepal
|
Pashupatinath is to the Hindus in Nepal what Varanasi is to the Hindus in India: a sacred city where Hindus come (to die and) to be cremated. The Hindu religious belief is that dying and being cremated in Pashupatinath and having your ashes scattered in the Bagmati river will give you salvation. The water of the Bagmati is holy because it eventually flows into the holy Ganges river. In this way, the Hindu will be released from the cycles of rebirth, the ultimate object worth pursuing.
Along the river side, there are several ghats used for both cremations and purification baths. The complex with its several temples is large and serenity and tranquility rule the compound. Non-Hindus are not allowed in the main temple ...

Birganj
Location
:
Nepal
|
You may chance to pass through the cities of Birganj and Raxual, on the Nepali and the Indian sides of the border respectively, if you're travelling across the border of the two countries (on the southern fringes Nepal). If you have to spend a night, Birganj would be a better choice. Arguably the best hotel option in Birganj would be Hotel Vishuwa. Rooms here would cost you about US$50. The place has a set of high-end facilities including a nice swimming pool, decent restaurant and has quite a safe locale. Did I mention AC North to the bus park, you cannot miss the big, green building. Depending on your pocket, there could be two more options after a 7-minute rickshaw ride on the main road northward from Raxual you'll...

Bhaktapur
Location
:
Nepal
|
Bhaktapur is one of the three major cities in the Kathmandu Valley. It can be easily reached by bus from Kathmandu or when you feel like it, by bike (be aware that especially at the beginning of the track, you'll be sharing the road with heavy trucks and some crazy drivers). But you'll be rewarded. As you're getting closer to Bhaktapur, the air becomes fresher again. Paddies are altered with trees and little cottages and there it lies, the city of Devotees.
Bhaktapur used to be the capital of the valley before Kathmandu got the honours at the beginning of the 17th century. At one of the main squares, the multi-roofed temple will undoubtedly make a lasting impression. Due to their enormous size and impressive carving...

Bodnath
Location
:
Nepal
|
Bodnath is only a short ride from Kathmandu and worth the detour. Although the town itself is fairly small, it boasts the largest Stupa in Nepal. Most visitors are rather surprised when they get out of one of the narrow alleys and set their eyes on this enormous stupa that was built by Tibetan Buddhists. Due to the fact that these Tibetans were not allowed to practise their religion in their home country, Bodnath has become an important religious centre. The enormous Stupa with its penetrating eyes, numerous prayer-wheels and swaying flags is built on a white elevation that is surrounded by small handicrafts shops and several 'gompas' (Tibetan Buddhists monasteries). If you're interested in both Tibetan culture and re...

Everest Region
Location
:
Nepal
|
To see the roof of the world you should come to Sagarmatha National Park, where the Everest is.
There are lots of possibilities to go there; the easy way or the long way. You can fly to Lukla and walk to Basecamp Mount Everest, Kalapathar, Gokyo Peak and many more. The trip to for example Base camp then will take you about six days with lots of tourist on the way.
For the real experience you should go to Jiri by bus and take a long walk to Gokyo peak (about 14 days) and fly back from Lukla (another 4 days to there). The first part you will see almost no tourists and the scenery is great. (note: -December 2004- You will meet Maoists in the first days, this is no problem if you pay about 10 Euro). After passing Lukla ...
